First little steps

Welcome back!
As I already told you I will have many meetings about South-Africa.
In the first meeting we introduced ourselves because not all the students knew each other.
We knew the plan; we would get a booklet including all the information we need and we were going to watch a movie.

We all got the booklet but this was not the only thing we got, we got a small travel bag for the most important stuff like your passport and wallet. This bag was made by the sewing studio we will visit and support in South-Africa. After we got this bag and the booklet we wanted to eat something because it was around 6 o'clock. Everybody made something to eat at home and took it to school. These were not just snacks like sausage rolls or wraps. Everybody made something which they also eat in South-Africa like milk cake and malvapudding. This was a new experience for most of us, to eat but also to make these dishes. We doubted whether we would like them but eventually most of us likes all the dishes. Only eating these dishes was a whole new experience already.

After we got something to eat we started the movie; Long walk to freedom.
The movie is about the main events in life of Nelson Mandela. The main themes in the film were his childhood, love life, principles, detention and presidency. Even though I knew a lot about Nelson Mandela I still learned a lot from this movie because it is about his whole life. To give an example; I did not know that Nelson Mandela was a lawyer. Some of the things I already knew also came in the movie, but this was no problem because now my knowledge is supported by images.

Talk to you later!

First post

Hi,
This is my first post on this blog, in this post I just want to tell you what you can expect.On this blog I will keep you updated about my road to South-Africa and eventually I will tell you about my stay in South-Africa. I am very excited because I have never bin outside Europe!

First some background information.This summer I am going to South-Africa with 21 other students and 4 teachers. With this group we will get some lectures, watch movies and have meetings. In South-Africa we will help three projects, we want to support them financially so our goal is to collect as much money as possible. The three projects we are going to support are;
  • Gugu Labanthu, an sewing studio, directed by Geina.
  • The Farm, an farm which  receives orphans.
  • Zibonele Junior Secondary School
It feels so good to be able to support people who can use some help. This is one of the main reasons why I want to go on this trip. However it's not the only reason I also want to go there because I have never bin outside Europe and this is an once in a lifetime opportunity. If you want to follow my trip on Facebook this is possible because we made a Facebookpage for this project to make people aware that we are going on this trip and to let people know what we are doing to raise as much money as possible. If you want to see this page you can click here. (sorry it's in Dutch because we are all Dutch students) I hope that when I return from this trip, I will know and understand so much more and that I will have a beautiful memory for the rest of my life which I can share with people who want to hear all about it.

Talk to you soon!
